2006 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid truck priced to sell. introductionthe 2006 chevy silverado is the last of its generation. An all-new generation of trucks is being introduced for 2007. So look for deals on the outgoing 2006 classic versions. The 2006 silverado rides well and handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails provide a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable. silverado benefitted from some significant revisions for 2005. Lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels provided better handling than before. A gas/electric hybrid option promised lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 included dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously; while aerodynamic refinements to the front end and running boards reduced wind noise and promised a slight improvement in fuel economy. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan, and toyota has joined the fray with the biggest tundra ever. There isn't a dog among them. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Silverado lt (starting at $23,000) is more luxurious, with upgraded upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Again the crew cab version 28,165) comes with more, including an upgraded six-speaker stereo. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on lt crew cabs. Lt2 and lt3 option packages add yet more equipment, but both price and specific content depend on cab style, driveline, and other factors. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim. a hybrid option 1,500) is available in several states. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 795). A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs. silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. silverado's large door openings make getting in and out easier, and the door handles are big and easy to grab. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All fleetside boxes measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings. a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short-box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. It can support a lot more weight than a steel tailgate. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier. the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Substantial changes improve one of the best. introductionchevrolet's full-size pickups get an edgy new look this year. Silverado's aggressive stance is jolting for drivers used to conservative-looking chevy pickups, but it's an evolutionary change and one that was needed. We'll get used to it. hidden beneath are considerable changes. Chevrolet silverado boasts more than 40 major changes for 2003. New audio and climate controls are easier to use and more sophisticated, the latter available with well-designed digital controls. Other changes are harder to discern, but are important from reliability and engineering standpoints, such as the all-new electrical system that eliminates thick bundles of wires and hundreds of connections. V8 engines offer improved throttle response and reliability and reduced emissions, while v6 engines deliver better performance and reduced emissions. (some of these changes were actually made mid-cycle to the 2002 models.) chevy silverado continues to be one of the best full-size trucks available. It shares that crown with the similar gmc sierra. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give the gm trucks a strong, rigid platform. Silverado is a highly capable truck. It rides, handles, and stops as well as, maybe better than, the best of them. It's quick and it's comfortable. These are still full-size work trucks, however, so don't expect a cadillac ride. technology is really improving life with full-size pickups. Stabilitrak, an anti-skid system, improves driver control in avoidance maneuvers and on slick surfaces. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt. It's a well-engineered system that's sophisticated, yet easy to operate. Xm satellite radio is a good option for people who want minimal blab interrupting their music or listen to dedicated news or sports channels. We wouldn't want to ride across the state in the back seat, but three adults can ride in reasonable comfort back there. Most of the time, the back seat is used for cargo. Alternatively, the seat bottom can be flipped up to load gear onto the floor. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed with a wrench and lifted out through the door. the back seats in crew cab models are roomy and very comfortable, similar to those in a suburban. The rear seats can be flipped down to provide a big, secure cargo area. This is a great truck for someone who wants a roomy rear seat with interior cargo space and big trailer-towing capability. . driving impressionrevised for 2003, the chevrolet silverado is among the best of the full-size pickups. silverado feels tight and quiet. There's little road noise and wind noise. Those are benefits of the stiff frame, which minimizes noise and vibration from the running gear. A new race-inspired 1le performance package on ss models equipped with the manual transmission includes a sportier suspension, high-performance summer tires and unique gearing. 2013 camaro ls and camaro lt models come with a 3. 6-liter v6 that makes 323 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic is optional. In terms of power, the v6 can pretty much pass for a v8, a bonus for the price. The v6 on 2013 models revs to 7200 rpm. engine modifications introduced for 2012 help with power and efficiency, and include a revised cylinder head design with integrated exhaust manifolds, improved intake ports, larger intake valves, longer-duration camshafts, a composite intake manifold, new fuel pump, optimized-flow fuel injectors, cylinder block enhancements, stronger and lighter connecting rods, and a cleaned up camshaft cap and throttle body. a camaro ls achieves a fair epa fuel economy rating for its class, at 19/30 mpg city/highway with the automatic transmission. camaro convertibles are equipped like the coupes but feature a power soft top fitted with acoustical foam in the headliner to minimize noise with the top up. Of torque with a 6-speed automatic, or 426 hp and 420 lb.-ft. With a 6-speed manual gearbox. The ss uses firmer shocks, springs and anti-roll bars than the v6 models, but the ride doesn't suffer for it. A limited-slip rear differential is included to reduce wheel spin when trying to put all that power down. the uber-high-performance camaro zl1 uses a supercharged version of the 6. 2-liter v8 good for a whopping 580 hp and 556 lb.-ft. It can accelerate from zero to 60 in 3 seconds flat with a top speed of 184 mph. While testing at germany's famed nurburgring racetrack, chevrolet factory drivers set a lap record with the zl1, beating the porsche 911 gt3. At $55k the zl1 is cheap, given its supercar levels of performance. We drove a camaro zl1 at virginia international raceway and found it both thrilling and easy to drive fast. It's a fantastic performance car, great for track events or autocrossing. Yet it can cruise comfortably around town and on the highway as a daily driver. The suspension does not punish the driver on rough roads. It's a very impressive machine. we found the handling, ride and brakes to be excellent in both the camaro lt with the v6 and the camaro ss with the big v8, although the ss suspension is stiffer and its 20-inch tires are firmer. The result is a top that appears smooth, taut and carefully tailored, while retaining the sleek roofline of the coupe. interiorthe cabin of the chevrolet camaro is oriented more around style than function. The standard cloth bucket seats are good, although the bolstering isn't fully there for hard cornering. The low bolsters make getting in and out of the camaro easier. Excellent leather upholstery is available in black, gray, beige and two-tone inferno orange, and interior materials are good. the front seat slides 8. 5 inches and the steering wheel tilts and telescopes, so drivers of all sizes will fit. The stitched leather wrap on the steering wheel is nice; the zl1 uses a smaller, race-inspired flat-bottomed wheel. a recessed speedometer and tachometer are set in square housings, a nod to the classic camaro interior. It would be even better if the rubber would be an insert that could be removed for cleaning. It would be better still if the top of the console wasn't angled forward: lay a clipboard there and it'll slide off. a redesigned instrument panel for 2003 includes a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, battery charge. Heavy-duty models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. It's more attractive and more sophisticated than the previous system, but just as easy to use. New dual-zone climate controls are standard. Sliders are used to adjust the temperature on base models with manual controls. Better are the available electronic climate controls, which use two large knobs for driver and passenger. A large led displays the mode and fan settings. It's a well-engineered system that's sophisticated, yet easy to operate. Xm satellite radio is a good option for people who want minimal blab interrupting their music or listen to dedicated news or sports channels. We wouldn't want to ride across the state in the back seat, but three adults can ride in reasonable comfort back there. Most of the time, the back seat is used for cargo. Alternatively, the seat bottom can be flipped up to load gear onto the floor. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed with a wrench and lifted out through the door. the back seats in crew cab models are roomy and very comfortable, similar to those in a suburban. Solid truck priced to sell. introductionthe 2006 chevy silverado is the last of its generation. An all-new generation of trucks is being introduced for 2007. So look for deals on the outgoing 2006 classic versions. The 2006 silverado rides well and handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails provide a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable. silverado benefitted from some significant revisions for 2005. Lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels provided better handling than before. A gas/electric hybrid option promised lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 included dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously; while aerodynamic refinements to the front end and running boards reduced wind noise and promised a slight improvement in fuel economy. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan, and toyota has joined the fray with the biggest tundra ever. There isn't a dog among them. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Heated and cooled front seats and hdd navigation with xm radio and usb are available on the 2012 silverado ltz. 2012 silverado models get new colors and chrome trim changes. Silverado was last redesigned for 2007. the base engine is a 4. 3-liter v6 (195 hp/260 lb-ft of torque) with a 4-speed automatic, offered only on regular cabs and 2wd extended cab models with the standard bed. Xfe versions feature aerodynamic upgrades in the form of a soft bed cover and extended front air dam, plus aluminum wheels (including the spare) and lower front suspension arms, locking rear differential, and low rolling resistance tires. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlights within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells. the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lights on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares. built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup gets a unique rear suspension and a frame section 245-percent stiffer than that of the suv. The current silverado chassis is far more rigid than that of the previous generation, which allowed the engineers to reduce the gaps between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. This stiffer frame also allows suspension components to be designed for improved ride and handling characteristics as well as allowing enhanced aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. the front suspension uses coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear design provides enhanced control and feedback. The silverado benefits from a rear axle design featuring shock absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control than that of the previous-generation models. interiorthe silverado wt, ls and lt come with what chevrolet calls the pure pickup interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior. the pure pickup interior is more driver and work oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. The center stack puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. We like both. extended cab models feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear-seat bottoms can be easily folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. It's a smooth, cohesive design with a central console that. It has gotten more luxurious over the years, sometimes becoming a substitute for a large sedan. for 2009, the suburban comes with a new six-speed automatic transmission. An integrated trailer brake controller is now available, which is a great feature for towing. Also new is the latest onstar version 8. 0, bluetooth, wheels, colors, an added third screen for the rear-seat entertainment option, xm navtraffic, two choices of backup camera systems, side blind zone alert option, more standards on ltz (such as heated and cooled memory front seats), a luxury package to bring a 2lt trim-level closer to ltz spec. The suburban was completely redesigned for 2007. suburban can handle 137 cubic feet of cargo, or up to nine passengers and 45 cubic feet or stuff, and myriad combinations in between. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and a good indication of gm's solid body quality on the current generation of trucks. rake was added to the windshield for 2007, improving aerodynamics and looks. The hood has two long bulges at its sides, reaching almost from windshield to grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome; we call them a good way to keep such a large expanse of otherwise-flat steel from fluttering, just as long-cab pickups have grooves on the roof. For aesthetics we would prefer if the roof-mounted antenna were centered but long, flat cargo on the roof might present a problem. the rear liftgate is vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Rear wiper coverage is average at best. Some are nearly void of chrome while the z71 adds machismo with sizable fender flares and side steps so short drivers can get in and tall ones can mess up their pant legs. the standard wheels are five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum. Polished wheels are available. Also available are 20-inch dubs that look good, but we think they are too big for grown-ups. Taller sidewalls yield a better ride and in most consumer-magazine testing those large-diameter wheels don't go, stop or handle any better, they just ride harder so we prefer the 17-inch wheels. The z71 package comes with 18-inch wheels. interiorthe chevy suburban can seat six to nine passengers, and even with all seats filled still has more than 40 cubic feet of cargo area. Interior lights abound, including reading lights. There are pockets in the front doors and behind the front seats, though none in the rear doors.
